abstract = {Ultraviolet (UV) radiation plays a key role in different planetary mechanisms, thus necessitating a worldwide analysis of this solar spectrum interval. This study offers a worldwide and long-term analysis of ozone radiative forcing (ORF) in the UV-B range between 1979 and 2014. The method uses monthly total ozone column (TOC) values obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis data collection and radiative transfer simulations. A global mean ORF of 0.011 Wm−2 is obtained, with marked differences between mid-latitude and tropical areas. The mid-latitude belts in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres exhibit the following statistically significant ORF trends between 1982 and 2014 with respect to pre-1980 values: 0.007 Wm−2 per decade in the 60-45°S belt and around 0.004 Wm−2 per decade in the 45-30°S and 45-60°N belts. The increase observed in the net UV-B radiation levels at the troposphere might have relevant photochemical effects that impact climate change.},

abstract = {The Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) was implemented by the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) starting observations with nine stations in 1992, under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Currently, 59 BSRN stations submit their data to the WCRP. One of these stations is the Izaña station (station IZA, no. 61) that enrolled in this network in 2009. This is a high-mountain station located in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain, at 28.3??N, 16.5??W; 2373?m?a.s.l.) and is a representative site of the subtropical North Atlantic free troposphere. It contributes with basic-BSRN radiation measurements, such as global shortwave radiation (SWD), direct radiation (DIR), diffuse radiation (DIF) and longwave downward radiation (LWD), and extended-BSRN measurements, including ultraviolet ranges (UV-A and UV-B), shortwave upward radiation (SWU) and longwave upward radiation (LWU), and other ancillary measurements, such as vertical profiles of temperature, humidity and wind obtained from radiosonde profiles (WMO station no. 60018) and total column ozone from the Brewer spectrophotometer. The IZA measurements present high-quality standards since more than 98?% of the data are within the limits recommended by the BSRN. There is an excellent agreement in the comparison between SWD, DIR and DIF (instantaneous and daily) measurements with simulations obtained with the LibRadtran radiative transfer model. The root mean square error (RMSE) for SWD is 2.28?% for instantaneous values and 1.58?% for daily values, while the RMSE for DIR is 2.00?% for instantaneous values and 2.07?% for daily values. IZA is a unique station that provides very accurate solar radiation data in very contrasting scenarios: most of the time under pristine sky conditions and periodically under the effects of the Saharan air layer characterized by a high content of mineral dust. A detailed description of the BSRN program at IZA, including quality control and quality assurance activities, is given in this work.},

abstract = {This paper focuses on the inter-comparison of integrated water vapor (IWV) products derived from the following satellite instruments: Global Ozone Monitoring Instrument (GOME-2), Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra and Aqua satellites, Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), Spining Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI), Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), and Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY). IWV data from GPS in nine ground-based stations located in the Iberian Peninsula are used as reference. The study period extends from 2007 to 2012. The results show that, in general, OMI has good accuracy (pseudomedian of the relative differences between OMI and GPS IWV of ( ?0.7 ± 1.1)%). However, OMI, SCIAMACHY and AIRS show higher inter-quartile range (IQR) (which indicates lower precision) than the rest of satellite instruments. Both MODIS satellite instruments and SEVIRI products tend to slightly underestimate reference IWV data while GOME-2 exhibits a notable overestimation (16.7 ± 0.8%). All satellite instruments showed a tendency to reduce IWV extreme values: low IWV is overestimated while high IWV is underestimated. As for the influence of solar zenith angle (SZA), it can be observed that GOME-2 strongly overestimates the reference for high SZA values (by around 60% for SZA 60 ? 80°). OMI shows, however, a high IQR for high SZA values. Both MODIS instruments show an increase in the pseudomedian of relative differences and IQR with SZA at daytime, with more stable values at night. Seasonal dependence is mainly due to the SZA and IWV typical values in each season. In general, in summer the tendency is to underestimate with low IQR (which happens when IWV is high and SZA is low), and in winter the trend is to overestimate with high IQR (which happens when IWV is low and SZA is high). SCIAMACHY shows a high pseudomedian in summer and autumn, and lower in winter and spring. It must be noted that GOME-2 shows a higher overestimation and OMI shows a higher IQR than other satellite instruments in winter and autumn. The influence of clouds was also studied, showing an increase of IQR as cloudiness increases in all satellites. Pseudomedian also worsens as cloudiness increases, generally},

abstract = {Continuous measurements of the optical properties of aerosol particles have been made at Valladolid, Spain, covering the period from June 2011 to July 2012. The measurements were made at two size cuts: sub-10 [small mu ]m and sub-1 [small mu ]m (PM10 and PM1). The data measured were the scattering and backscattering coefficients, [sigma]s and [sigma]bs, obtained from an integrating nephelometer, and the absorption coefficient, [sigma]a, obtained from a particle soot absorption photometer. Spectrally resolved data were obtained from both instruments at 3 wavelengths (blue/green/red) at low relative humidity (RH < 40%). The statistical data for the instruments were calculated based on the hourly averages. For the PM10 fraction, the hourly mean values of [sigma]s and [sigma]a at 550 nm were 33 Mm-1 (StD = 30 Mm-1) and 4 Mm-1 (StD = 3 Mm-1), respectively. For the PM1 fraction, [sigma]s and [sigma]a mean values were 16 Mm-1 (StD = 14 Mm-1) and 4 Mm-1 (StD = 3 Mm-1), also at 550 nm. The derived parameters analyzed were the single scattering albedo, [small omega]0, the backscatter fraction, [sigma]bs/[sigma]s, and the Angstrom exponents of scattering, absorption and single scattering albedo, [small alpha]s, [small alpha]a and [small alpha][small omega]0. The contribution of the PM10 and the PM1 fractions for all these parameters plays a central role throughout the paper, allowing an improved classification of aerosol types. Our data are dominated by elemental carbon (EC) and elemental carbon/organic carbon mixed (EC/OC). For the PM10 data, dust dominated aerosol is also observed. Although we found that fine particles contribute more than coarse particles for decreasing the [small omega]0 values, results suggest that it is also necessary to quantify the effect of coarse particles. Fine particles were found to produce [small omega]0 spectra that decrease with the wavelength, [small alpha][small omega]0 > 0, while PM10 fractions were found to produce spectra that can decrease or increase with the wavelength, 0 < [small alpha][small omega]0 < 0. Both daily cycle and monthly variations are analyzed and related to local features as well as the transport of particles from elsewhere. A diurnal pattern characteristic of urban areas is observed, but it is less evident on weekends. The main long range transport influences are Atlantic advection, anthropogenic events from Central Europe and dust events.},

The five/six-year annual mean values for the aerosol optical thickness at 500 nm τ(500) at Andenes and Hornsund both were 0.09. At Hornsund, there was less variation of the monthly mean value of τ(500) than at Andenes. The annual mean values of the Ångström exponent α at Andenes and Hornsund were 1.29 and 1.34, respectively. At Andenes and Hornsund α was found to be larger than 1.1 in 68% and 84% of the observations, respectively, indicating that fine-mode particles were dominating at both sites. Both sites had a similar aerosol size distribution during summer although one site is in an arctic area while the other site is in a subarctic area.},
